Overview
Every challenge or barrier my audience faces can be re-framed as an opportunity. In this project, I will identify design opportunities, frame clear problem statements, and test potential solutions to identify the ones most likely to succeed. I will bring my audience into the design process to deepen your understanding of the problem I am trying to solve and what success looks like. My “client” is CCA, who has requested help with the following design prompt: “How might we improve the commute experience for CCA students and faculty?”

Target Audience & What I Learn

CCA students who has an irregular class schedule and didn’t find a suitable app they could use for navigating their commute route.

Hard to find a perfect target audience, everyone has different needs and sees my problem in different perspectives.

Initial Problem Statement

I am a CCA student who has a different class schedule and hates changes.

I am trying to catch up on class on time and have more stability and efficiency for transportation.

But I can’t use the same methods for commuting every day and need to check to schedule in advance.

Because the school schedule does not match up with the bus and shuttle schedule.

Which makes me feel annoyed for checking and changing the commutes every day.

I selected 3 ideas that I felt like I could research and think more from a problem solving point of view. Because in the brainstorm most solutions related to money, like having a private driver, providing CCA commute scholarship,etc. These kinds of solutions are hard to research, because it needs an economic base and approval from school. These are some of the objective factors that I thought about in advance.

I picked alerts, matched up schedules and the same major same schedule. First of all, we voted in a group of 3 people and I accepted their suggestion.

For the alerts, it could be a reminder for students from preventing them being late for school.
​
There are alert apps existing in the world now, but we still always forget to set them up. Some time, our schedule has been changed or our faculties add new events, this app could help CCA students set them up automatically.​

For matched up schedules and the same major students have the same schedule these two solutions, I was thinking about having a better schedule could help students have better time management. They do not need to waste their time waiting for the shuttle and public transportation. Also, if the same major students have the same schedule, they could commute together for security concerns.
Final Solution Storyboards
Commute APP
First design solution is to create an app that could suggest the best route for a whole month which analyzes the traffic data from the society. Also the app could set the alarm for reminding the students and let students avoid being late.
Context + User Needs
I am already late for class and still checking the best route for going to the CCA campus.
Solution
The app refers the best route to school for a month and there is an alerts to remind me.
Resolution + Value to user
I could catch up on time and do not need to check the route everyday.
New Schedule
For the second solution, CCA could redesign the schedule that perfectly fit the public transportation schedule, so that students do not have to waste their time waiting for the bus and caltrain. Also the schedule should have the same time period for different days so that students could take the same commute for different days in a week.
Context + User Needs
I am tired about waiting for bart after class on the way back home.
Solution
The new schedule perfect match the bart schedule and the time is similar so I could take the same transportation.
Resolution + Value to user
By doing the new schedule, I could have more time to finish my homework and do well in time management.
